Chesil Radio Supports Local Business On Carnival Day & Makes A 60th Birthday Extra Special
Chesil Radio had planned to take the Weymouth Carnival off this year, Nikki Latham had not missed one in 7 years commentating for various radio stations.
But fate intervened…
Nikki ended up on the seafront on the evening of the first day of the carnival and decided to take a slow wander towards the Pavilion. Nikki says: “As I walked towards along the front I saw a bar on the beach. I thought I have a few mins to spare to go and check it out.”
This bar was run by www.tobiasjacks.co.uk, Nikki had never met any of the team before. The bar was very quiet and was positioned away from all the other carnival beach activities and Nikki got chatting with the team and let it slip that she could only have a couple as she had to go back to do her radio show. Nikki told the team about Chesil Radio and soon they were making requests for the show and was soon playing out on a speaker behind the bar. and lights appeared as well.
The lantern parade was the opposite way to previous years starting the Pavilion end of the beach towards the Pier but missed the bar completely, as they turned left away from the beach bar. Nikki then offered to mention the bar additionally on the following days breakfast show and put a recommendation message on the jukebox that had been planned for the scheduled day off.
Nikki left on the first day promising to play their requests and mentioning how lovely it was on the beach having a beer. As soon as the Breakfast Club was finished, the daytime replacement Jukebox was amended. Nikki says: “It only took about half an hour to record a couple of recommendation links for them and slot them in. It really was a pleasure to help. I watched the webcam on the Pavilion to see that they had customers. But the fabulous thing was they were listening to Chesil Radio.”
When Nikki left they were dancing away to Chesil Radio and was pleased that even if it were for that short time it was a great birthday present to the station, who celebrates its birthday this Saturday and Sunday, starting at the Radipole Park & Gardens’ 1940s Big Event in Weymouth between 12noon and 4pm.
Nikki and the boss, John Latham, popped down after the Carnival parade and was so pleased to hear that Chesil Radio was coming not just from the speaker but at the other end of the bar from one of the team’s mobile phone. Very kindly Tobias Jacks supplied us with a couple of free drinks for doing this for them, which wasn’t the reason why Chesil Radio did this. Nikki adds: “I could see where they were positioned was wrong for the entertainment on the beach and just wanted to help any way we could, the drinks were a pleasant bonus. I even jumped on the mic to do a breaking news show to highlight their happy hour during the day. Chesil Radio loves to support local business and although not from Weymouth, they were only just down the road.”
At the end of the night, Tobias Jacks made a wonderful offer to the station, and resulted in a competition to win a barrel of Boon Doggle. Nikki agreed to do an extra show on Saturday morning to announce the winner. Nikki says: “Once again I was happy to do the extra show and was so pleased to announce the winner Deena Bools, who incidentally it was her 60th birthday that day.
We always welcome businesses to run competitions with us and this was made extra special with Chesil Radio playing out on the beach on carnival day and being to help a local resident celebrate a milestone birthday.”
We would like to take this opportunity to thank tobiasjacks.co.uk for their support and hope that in some small way we may have helped them also have a good Carnival Day in Weymouth.
