As we wrap up the Halloween festivities for another year, it’s time to shift our focus toward the rapidly approaching Christmas season. With twinkling lights and festive decorations soon to adorn streets and homes, anticipation builds for family gatherings, gift-giving, and delicious holiday treats.
For many this impending approach means worries that in a G7 country we should never have to face.
The moneycharity.org.uk in 2023, put the price of a family Christmas at £1,811.70 equivalent to 80% of average monthly wages. Just 30 years ago it was £220, and adjusted for inflation, costs have risen 290% in that time. With our current inflationary situation this will only grow further this year.
4.3 million children (30% of the uk child population) are living in relative low income households after housing costs from the UK Government’s own figures from 2022/23. Reported in April, this year, Shelter says that is more than 100,000 more than previous reporting years.
Latest figures, also place more than 150,000 children living in temporary accommodation.
I have been unable to get a figure for our area, but shows that parents are struggling again this Christmas.
In past years, we've supported local businesses to provide Dorchester residents in enjoying a complimentary Christmas Day meal, complete with company and entertainment. This year, we’re excited to support The Old Ship in Dorchester, Dorset, as they launch their wonderful campaign aimed at ensuring that no child goes without a Christmas present in the county town. Your help is crucial!
Below is the details of how to donate and all the wrapped parcels will be delivered by the pub landlord to Dorchester Family Support for Santa to deliver in time.
So let’s help Santa and his elves out this Christmas and if you can add that extra item in the basket for a child when you go Christmas shopping…Every little bit helps bring joy and warmth during this magical time of year!
