Have you ever noticed the vibrant crayons at Dorset County Hospital and pondered their purpose or origin?
Known as "The Pencils", and designed to be seen from the Children's Ward. These colourful, 30-foot kinetic sculptures have been gracing the hospital's entrance since they were installed in 1991. Designed by talented artist Peter Logan, this striking artwork not only serves as an eye-catching visual but also symbolizes creativity and healing within the healthcare environment.
This was one of the first of these artistic designs to the hospital and was donated by the Linbury Trust. The sculpture features a dynamic arrangement of oversized crayons that sway gently with the wind, inviting patients, visitors, and staff to pause and reflect on their surroundings. Beyond aesthetics, these whimsical elements encourage conversations about art's role in promoting well-being during challenging times.
They have become a beloved landmark in Dorchester—a meeting point where community members can gather while offering comfort through artistic expression.
Next time you visit the hospital, take a moment to appreciate this unique fusion of art and functionality!
